Gallup Poll Shows Bush Approval At 40% genre: Polispeak & Six Degrees of Speculation
The latest Gallup poll indicates that President Bush has an overall approval rating of 40% while some 55% disapprove of his performance. These numbers reflect a string of recent gains for Bush who had been at a record low approval of 31% in May. Read the details here.
Bush's job approval ratings continue to be highly polarized along partisan lines. The president's job approval ratings currently stand at 78% among Republicans, 36% among independents, and lower still among Democrats, at 10%. In early May, Bush's average support was 68% among Republicans, 26% among independents, and 4% among Democrats. His improved public standing has been mainly due to higher ratings by Republicans and independents.
I've argued that the critical numbers to watch are those reported by independents. It appears that the President has made some meaningful gains with this group, having gone from 26% in the May findings to the current 36%. I expect to see the Republican Party and Karl Rove make a concerted effort to court these voters prior to the November midterm election.
