The Roxy NYC: 1991-2007 genre: Gaylingual & Happy Remembrances
The Roxy in New York celebrated a final farewell party two weeks ago tomorrow. The Roxy closed after a run of sixteen years as one of the more notable gay dance clubs in the city. Numerous celebrities performed at the club over the years and while there is a good deal of nostalgia attached to the venue, it has lost some of its luster in recent years. Notwithstanding, it's sad to see it go.
The following graphic incorporates the flyer that was circulated in anticipation of the closing party as well as a photo I took in Amsterdam a couple of years back. When I saw this marquee, it instantly made me think of the club in New York City. Obviously, with the name Roxy and the images of the Statue of Liberty, it was an easy connection. I thought the two images made for a fitting tribute to this iconic part of gay cultural history.
