Changing Population Demographics & Immigration genre: Indie-Script & Polispeak & Six Degrees of Speculation

Hispanics remain the fastest growing segment of the American population. Despite what many may assume, the bulk of that growth is fueled more by births than by illegal immigration. The information comes from newly released census bureau information. The full article can be found here.

(May 10) -- Hispanics remain the USA's fastest-growing minority group, but most of their population increase comes from births here rather than immigration, according to Census Bureau estimates released Tuesday.

As debate over immigration policy roils the nation, government numbers show that 60% of the 1.3 million new Hispanics in 2005 are citizens because they were born here.

A third of the nation's 296.4 million people are considered minorities. Hispanics are the largest minority group at 42.7 million, up 3.3% from mid-2004 to mid-2005.

In effect, the data show that even if immigration came to a standstill, the Hispanic population boom would not end for at least another generation.

There are 35.2 million foreign-born people, about 12% of the population. The share of immigrants has soared since its historic low of 4.7% in 1970. The percentage of foreign-born is still below peaks reached more than 100 years ago, but it's fast approaching them. From 1860 to 1920, the foreign-born population fluctuated from 13% to 15%.

The information once again points out the complexity of the immigration issue. The rhetoric of those on either extreme seems to ignore much of the relevant data. A comprehensive and thorough review of all the interconnected factors is long overdue. The inconsistent immigration policies of the last 20 years will be felt for years to come. If the issue continues to be manipulated as nothing more than a political calculation, the solutions will simply become even more complex. Prior postings on the subject can be found here and here.
