Jennifer Hudson vs. Jennifer Holliday genre: Tuned Out & Video-Philes

Jennifer Holliday was in the original Broadway version of Dreamgirls and she played the part that is now being played by Jennifer Hudson in the movie. As expected, there has been an immediate attempt to compare the two singer's performances to determine which is better. I would suggest that the viewer simply enjoy both performances...but if you're determined to pick a favorite, video of both singing And I am Telling You follows:

I saw them both (Holliday live) and they are BOTH superb - just in somewhat different ways. Hudson, who blows the roof off the place, is less gritty than Holliday...either way, we WIN!

I enjoyed them both but J. Hudson, blew it out, for a minute I thought it was a gospel song and I wanted to start shouting. OH YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jennifer holiday owns this song. I feel the desparation in her voice. Jhud bring a new age quality to this song as well. Brilliant. Chills. The right actresses for the right time.

Jennifer Holliday - There's no way anyone could ever touch her performance. Without her original performance, Hudson would not have been able to present hers in the fashion she did. Hudson good. Holliday Great! There's no way we could ever live without Jennifer Holliday's performance.

Jennifer Hudson does a great job, but Jennifer Holiday is the powerhouse. It's a great song for a diva and it's holiday's song forever.

Jennifer Hudson's treatment of the song is quite good, although I didn't fully appreciate it until I saw the movie. (I bought the soundtrack before seeing the movie.) However, NOBODY will ever knock it out the ballpark like Jennifer Holliday. Her version will always be one for the ages!!! I regret not having seen the Broadway show so many years ago.

I was fortunate enough to see the Original Dream Girls in New York many years ago featuring Jennifer Holliday. I must admit that she is still the greatest. I saw the movie and it was good, but its usually hard to beat the originator of anything, and Jennifer Holliday is hard to beat because that is her SONG. Do you know why they did not use her for the movie version of Dream Girls?

Hey all,

Thanks for the comments. I wish I had been fortunate enough to see Jennifer Holliday's performance. Given the wow factor of the video, I can only imagine how phenomenal it must have been performed live.

At the same time, props to Jennifer Hudson...she is quite talented.

Regards,

Daniel

I saw Jennifer Holiday on Broadway. Her performance was one of the century. I was lifted from that seat and I felt her emotions and her vulnerability grasping my entire soul. She is extraordinary.

Jennifer Hudson sung the hell out of that song. It doesn't really matter who did it first. Jennifer Holliday doesn't have nearly the range that Hudson does. Just because she did it first doesn't necessarily mean she is the better singer. Her voice is too gritty. Jennifer damn near brought me to tears on Dreamgirls.

Jennifer Hudson blew that song. Jennifer Holiday just jealous because of all the attention that Jhud got. And it showed at the BET awards cause she looked like she was havin a seisure. She need to sit down and let jennifer Hudson have her time to shine cause she sent chills up my spine wit that song!!!!!!!!!!!

People think that Holiday's performance was better because Hudson's performance was more subtle.

Frankly, Holiday sounds like a Duck with that weird scratchy thing she does.

Jennifer Hollday dominates this song. Hudson's voice has no tone, it's too airy. There's a reason American Idol told her she'd never amount to anything - they were right, as far as singing goes. I don't think people realize that she won an Academy Award, not a Grammy.
