Dick Cheney To Raise Funds For Anti-Gay Candidate genre: Polispeak & Six Degrees of Speculation

Vice President Cheney will attend a fundraiser in Minnesota for congressional candidate Michele Bachmann, a vocal opponent of gay marriage. Read the full article here and view Bachmann's campaign website here. See prior Thought Theater postings on the subject here and here.

From the Star Tribune:

The June 26 event will be at the Excelsior home of William and Karen Hawks on the shore of Lake Minnetonka.

Guests will be asked to donate $250 each to attend the reception. Those giving $1,000 to Bachmann's campaign can attend a more intimate reception and have their picture taken with Cheney.

From Bachmann's website:

Sanctity of Human Life:

Michele is, and has always been, strongly against abortion.
Michele believes that human life must be protected from conception to a natural death.
Michele is the author of presumption of life legislation.
Michele is a frequent speaker at local pro-life forums and conferences.

Marriage:

Michele supports traditional marriage as a union between a man and woman.
Michele is the chief author of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

While one may be able to understand Cheney's support for the President despite his endorsement of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, there is little justification for Dick Cheney to campaign for a vocal social conservative who favors preventing gays from marrying. This merely confirms my prior assertion that the Cheney's have long concluded that power and position are the key elements to their independence and freedom to live as they choose. Money and power assure that they can function without the complications of the average American...let alone those of gay Americans.

It also supports the argument that Republicans are only using the gay marriage issue to garner votes in order to maintain power...knowing full well an amendment will never succeed. Additionally, taking a principled stand on gay marriage runs the risk of making it doubtful that Cheney would be hired to attend paid speaking engagements at conservative events once he is out of office in 2009. Maybe he can write the sequel to Mary's book. He could call it, Get To The Back Of The Line...We'll Tell You When Our Turns Over.
